Effective Ways Of Managing Anxiety

Have you ever had a situation that brought on the sweats, rapid heartbeat and shortness of breath? No you probably weren’t having a heart attack but an anxiety panic attack. If you suffer from any anxiety disorders, learning how to control it is the first step to overcoming it.

The Linden Method

Anxiety is defined as extreme reactions to fearful situations.  When you are followed into a dark alley, those panicky feelings of a rapid heartbeat and sweaty palms gives way to heightened senses and then a rush of adrenalin that can save your life.  This is the fight or flight syndrome.

In the case of repeated anxiety, the panic feelings are dread of a particular situation and not the situation itself. For example, getting caught in traffic can cause an anxiety attack, not over getting caught up in a traffic jam, but over what might happen when you get to work late.  Starting a new job can often bring about an anxiety attack.  You probably don’t know anyone that works there and the fear of that unknown can send you into a panic.

Everyone, at sometime or another, experiences panic or anxiety attacks in small ways.  Like the fight or flight for example, it can save your life.  In new situations, we get anxious but when the outcome we fear fails to happen, then the panic stops, except for someone with chronic anxiety, then this is not the case.

Every experience that brings on anxiety is not a life-threatening one.  More often than not it is the extremely stressful situation that has caused the anxiety as a way of dealing with it.  Unchecked anxiety like this can lead to depression.

If you suffer from anxiety attacks only on certain occasions or you have a more frequent anxiety disorder, there are steps you can take to  keep these anxieties under control

1. See a professional.  This is always the first step to take. Self-diagnosis of any condition, whether physical or mental is unwise and could be dangerous.  A psychologist can help you understand your anxieties and can prescribe medication or other effective treatments.

2. Make sure you get a good night’s sleep.  During the sleep cycle, your body repairs itself.  You feel more relaxed after several hours of restorative sleep, reaching the REM stage.  Most people need eight hours a night but this can vary within an hour or two either way.

3. Exercising on a regular basis.  Exercise helps you to absorb oxygen more efficiently, which,in turn helps to get more oxygen to the brain.  It also increases your focus which can help you see the solutions to problems rather than simply just worrying about them.

4. Meditation, this is more than just chanting mantras.  Yoga is an exercise that involves clearing your mind and controlling your breathing. Even simple mediation such as taking 5 minutes to clear your mind everyday can work wonders in the fight against anxiety.

5. Take control of the worry.  When your pulse start to quicken, count backwards from ten.  As you count, focus on what has actually happened, and resist the urge to read anything more into the situation than there really is.

6. Don’t drink alcohol.  You might think that the glass of wine is a good way of  relaxing your tension but alcohol is a depressant.  In anxious situations if you  rely too heavily on it you could create another problem in the process.

7. Find something to do that is relaxing, as stress can rob you of your energy.  Regularly , do something you like doing such as gardening, painting, reading or just listen to some music.

It’s normal for anxiety to come into your life at any time..  Only when the anxiety becomes a frequent occurrence could you be at risk of a much more serious conditions.  If ever your anxiety starts to take over your life or it is  increasingly causing you problems, you must seek professional help immediately.  There is no need to suffer this terrible condition in silence.
